Millions of Dollars in Idalia Damages

Last week, Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson announced the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ report outlining the preliminary estimates of damage to Florida agriculture from Hurricane Idalia had been released.
The report includes more than $447 million in total losses and damages across the state’s diverse agricultural sectors. Everything from fruit and tree nuts to melons to forestry to livestock were impacted.
Current losses are estimated to be up to $157.6 million in animal and animal product damages, which includes losses to infrastructure and machinery/equipment. Losses are estimated up to $93.6 million in field crop damages and up to $68.8 million in greenhouse/nursery damages.
These estimates are based on data obtained from a number of entities including the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, the Florida Census of Agriculture, and the early communication conducted by FDACS with industry leaders and individual producers.
