From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. If you’ve become a fan of Cosmic Crisp apples since they became available a few years ago, like I have, don’t be surprised if you see the supply continue to grow this year.

Stemilt Growers Marketing Director, Brianna Shales says there should be more …

SHALES … “Yeah, last year with the short apple crop, Cosmic Crisp was one of those items that we actually had more of year over year and that’s a lot because the variety is coming into bearing age and orchards are finally producing a commercial crop. So it was, you’re right, one of the bright moments when it came to apple promotions last year.”

Also growing in availability is the organic Cosmic Crisp …

SHALES … “Yeah, organic apples are up quite a bit over last year, which again was a low but you’re exactly right, we’re seeing more volume come into production from high-bearing acreage.”

I asked Shales if that’s because consumers are asking for organic? …

SHALES … “Yes, based on demand but also based on climate conditions that Washington has over other growing regions.”

And while Cosmic Crisp is a favorite of mine, Shales says, it’s becoming a favorite for many …

SHALES … “I think we’re starting to see consumers feel the same way. You know, it’s taken up more shelf space, it’s almost available year-round and so once you have those kind of attributes and it’s more top of mind for consumers, they have a great experience with them when they bring them home. I think it’s going to be a win.”
