From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Sustainability is evolving and growing into a concept or a thought or a practice that is much more than just environmental impact.

According to John Mesko, Executive Director of the Potato Sustainability Alliance, sustainability these days is about economic impact and community impact on many different levels …

MESKO … “So, sustainability is growing in importance and growing in exposure all over, you’re absolutely right. And a lot of the momentum behind this is coming from the consumer and the investment community. People want to see their dollars invested in businesses that do no harm.”

Mesko says, it’s more than that …

MESKO … “Increasingly, not only do no harm, but actually benefit and grow our global economy and improve our environment globally. So, sustainability is evolving and expanding in its reach.”

As for his Alliance, Mesko says, that’s growing too …

MESKO … “What we do at the Potato Sustainability Alliance is we currently work with farmers in North America to define, quantify and measure on-farm sustainability practices and share that with them, so they know where they’re at, but also share it with the processing community and the value chain throughout the potato industry.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the Potato Sustainability Alliance and what it means for the industry.
