Cosmic Crisp Are Here Pt 1
With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. If you haven’t seen them in your grocery stores yet, look a little closer because those delicious Cosmic Crisp apples are back and somewhere in a grocery store near you.
Stemilt Growers Marketing Director, Brianna Shales says they made it to the stores quicker than the first two years …
SHALES … “A little bit earlier this year than in the past three years. The kind of, launch date for the apple was moved up a few weeks. And, along with that, the industry made sure that the starch to sugar ratio was going to be at a good consumer eating quality because this is a variety that tends to do well with a little bit of time in storage after harvest.”
And this year, Shales says there will be more of them …
SHALES … “We’re definitely going to see increased volumes which is coming at a good time because the apple volume as a whole for Washington state is down over last year and a pretty moderate crop.”
So, Shales says they’re happy to do it …
SHALES … “That’s exciting for Cosmic Crisp to be able to fill some of the gaps of other varieties as well as, it will be able to go longer into the season. So, this year we should be able to offer it out to retailers and consumers for longer.”
Shales says they’re really excited …
SHALES … “I think this year, as the trees have started to mature out there, and in the growing conditions that we had this fall, we’re just going to see really, really good flavors and quality on Cosmic Crisp.”
