Walla Walla Valley Wine Month Pt 1

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. The wine industry in the Walla Walla Valley has seen incredible growth over the past few decades.

So much so, that to celebrate their success, the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance has announced the creation of the first annual Walla Walla Valley Wine Month.

I asked, Alliance Executive Director, Robert Hansen, why April? …

HANSEN … “it’s pretty interesting. Our growing season starts in April and March is Washington’s wine month and Oregon is May and in the middle, you know, Walla Walla fits perfectly. We’re an AVA that has Oregon and Washington in it and we believe that it’s a good chance to, you know, work with the wine and hospitality communities to come together and raise awareness of the region.”

Besides that, Hansen says it gets wine season rolling …

HANSEN … “It’s a good month to get people starting to think about Walla Walla. It’s a good month to have people here. You know, it’s green, it’s beautiful, the weather’s a lot nicer than it is in February and March and it’s a perfect time to visit.”

Wine month events, Hansen says are still in development …

HANSEN … “The first weekend of Wine Month has some kick offs already set up that are traditional here. And then, other wineries will probably jump into the fray to celebrate the first weekend, and then other events are happening during the month so we just thought we would bring them together all as one and under one umbrella.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on Walla Walla Valley Wine Month.
