With today’s Fruit Grower report, I’m Bob Larson. Just when it looked like the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement might be headed for a vote in the not too distant future, Congress is hit with impeachment hysteria after a whistle-blower brings the President under heavy scrutiny based on a phone conversation he had with Ukrainian President.

Whether or not this kind of political distraction will derail timely USMCA ratification, U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says …

NEWHOUSE … “You know, I hate to agree with that hypothesis for fear that might make it come true, but that has been a concern that it would be held up for political reasons other than policy reasons.”

But, Newhouse says the importance of the USMCA when it comes to trade can’t be lost in the media spectacle …

NEWHOUSE … “I still think that the comments that I’ve been hearing from the majority party, that there’s still a strong understanding and, I think, a lot of support for ratifying or passing the USMCA. I think there’s a lot of reasons to do so policy-wise. People get the fact that Mexico and Canada are our two top trading partners and this is a critical piece that we need to get done for our economy, for our producers, but I also fully understand that this could be seen as a win for President Trump.”

Newhouse says Congress should be legislating on behalf of the American people, not continuing endless investigations and reckless impeachment inquiries fueled by media frenzy.
