CLA Favors Meat Labeling Bill
A State House committee will take up a bill that would prohibit cultured or lab grown foods from being labeled as meat.House Bill 19-1102 states that food is misbranded as "meat" or a cut of meat if it does not come from animals and that lab-grown meat is misbranded as "meat" or a cut of meat unless these terms are not modified by "lab-grown" or "artificially cultured".
Colorado Livestock Association Chief Executive Officer Bill Hammerich says the proposed legislation gets their support.
"Certainly we want to protect our industry but we think the protection of the consumers' interest comes ahead of the industry because they're the ultimate users of our products."
The bill's bipartisan sponsors are Representatives Rod Pelton, Kimmi Lewis, and Senators Jerry Sonnenberg, and Joann Ginal
The Bill assigned to the House Public Healthcare and Human Services Committee which has it on the docket for discussion February 1st.
