Wada Farms operates in 6 diversified farming locations across three counties, totaling around 30,000 irrigated acres. The original farming operation has expanded to include a fresh potato, onion and sweet potato sales & marketing group, 140,000 sq. ft. fresh potato packing warehouse and trucking company. Growing over a billion potatoes annually, they’re among the largest growers and shippers in the industry. But there is something else. “Initially you will see this with potatoes packed inside. We are thinking that all of the produce category in your grocery store could convert over to made from renewable materials, eco-friendly packaging similar to Tater Made.” The Tater Made packaging that owner Chris Wada just mentioned is a plastic bag made out of approximately 25% potato starch. This makes their bag, which they are in the process of marketing, much more biodegradable than traditional plastic bags you get it a grocery store. But just because Wada’s a huge operation, doesn’t mean that they’re insensitive to the environment as so many naysayers claim about big time production agriculture. “We are a grower, shipper and marketer of fresh produce but we also have a big focus on sustainability internally, not just limited to growing practices and preserving the soil for future generations and healthy abundant yields but it also includes people, packaging and in this case it is a big destination to where it helped us develop this Tater Made eco-friendly bag that helped reduce our carbon footprint.”
