Celebrating dairy month at Meridian dairy days included a day for kids and parents to visit a dairy farm. CEO of Dairy West, Karianne Fallow says it’s all about connecting people to food. “we do it here in Meridian because it’s obviously in the middle of a population center. We really want to connect people with where their food comes from.” Michelle Woodland from Pennsylvania was chaperoning a handful of kids through the stations where free food snacks and dairy facts were readily available. Woodland says her group is definitely connecting farm to food. “Not only being outdoors but seeing how to work hard. How hard people have to work for the food that they eat. It is not only farmers but the truckers that ship the food. I explained to these kids that there is a lot of sacrifice and a lot of hard work goes into what we take for granted. It’s important and makes for grateful children, empathetic and aware children.” The Jackson family farm started in 1953. Third generation dairy man Clint enjoys showing the Jersey cow farm to guests. “They will need about 40 or 50 pounds a day so if you have a teenage boy you might be able to relate. They also drink a lot, if it’s a really hot day a dairy cow can drink a bathtub full of water per day.
