03/01/06 Renewable fuel standard urged

Washington Ag March 1, 2006 Told the time for talk is done, it is time for action, people attending the Harvesting Clean Energy Conference in Spokane Tuesday, were urged to call their legislators and have them support renewable fuels standard bills in the Washington Legislature. That plea came from Read Smith, an eastern Washington farmer and co-chair of the national Ag Energy Work Group. Smith: "We need to take this first step and it is only a first step. We are going to have to massage as we go to fix the things that are wrong. But we need to take the first step because it is important. So please call your legislators and seek their support. And this needs to be done in the next 24 hours." House Bill 2738 and Senate Bill 6508, which have each passed their chamber of origin, would trigger a certain level of biofuels be in fuel sold in the state once Washington production of feedstocks and crushing facilities reach levels vaguely defined in the bills. The Washington Farm Bureau has supported a renewable fuels standard. The Washington Association of Wheat Growers opposes having a government mandate. I'm Bob Hoff
