02/23/06 FB applauds Oregon decision on 37

Washington Ag February 23, 2006 The Washington Farm Bureau is applauding a decision this week by the Oregon Supreme Court which upheld Measure 37, the property rights initiative approved by 61 percent of Oregon voters a few years ago. The Washington Farm Bureau has its own Property Fairness Initiative it's seeking to put on the November ballot, and although it is significantly different from Measure 37, Farm Bureau spokesman Dean Boyer, says the Oregon decision has some relevance here. Boyer: "The opposition has really tried to really hang Measure 37 around our necks pointing out the fact that a lower court in Oregon ruled that initiative unconstitutional and saying that the same thing is likely to happen here in Washington should our initiative should pass. Well of course now we know the highest court in Oregon ruled Oregon's initiative is constitutional and we don't think that our initiative faces any serious court challenge to that affect here in Washington after we get it passed in November." By the way the Farm Bureau's Property Fairness initiative is now officially "Initiative 933." The measure would require government to compensate landowners when regulations damage the use or value of private property. I'm Bob Hoff.
