I'm Bob Larson. In an effort to reduce food waste across the country U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse is heading up the Bipartisan Congressional Food Recovery Caucus.

Along with his co-chair, Maine Democrat Chellie Pingree, Newhouse welcomed the President's launch of "the Winning on Reducing Food Waste Initiative" a collaborative effort by the USDA, EPA and FDA ...

NEWHOUSE ... "Both of us are delighted that the President is putting a lot of emphasis through his administration on the issue of reducing the amount of food waste, particularly highlighting that in this month of April."

Newhouse says one example of how to cut food waste is with the prepared meals grocery stores sell ...

NEWHOUSE ... "But, that food offering as you probably have wondered about, you know they don't sell it all so a lot of it ends up being thrown away, and we're looking ways of how we could utilize those foods instead of just having them end up in landfills, but trying to help feed hungry people with them."

But, he says they will look at many different to ways reduce ...

NEWHOUSE ... "There's lots of different things like that that we'll be looking at to see what's possible. We do have to look at food safety. A lot of issues around making sure that the source of food and the transportation of the food and those kinds of things can be done in such a way that they will be safe to eat. But, it's really kind of looking at all the possibilities of how we can address this."

In 2015, the EPA and USDA launched the first-ever national food waste reduction goal, aimed at reducing food waste by 50% by 2030.
