10/06/05 Fighting trade barriers; GoAg

Washington Ag October 6, 2005 Nearly 500-thousand dollars is available to promote Washington agriculture by reducing trade barriers and finding new ways to market the state's agricultural commodities. The funds were provided earlier this year by the state Legislature. The Washington State Department of Agriculture is accepting proposals from commodity commissions, public entities, associations or nonprofit organizations. Those applying should be able to provide matching funds or in-kind contributions. Application deadline is October 10th. For more information contact Janet Leister at the WSDA at 360-902-1931. It's called "Go AG and its going on tomorrow at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake. Jaime Sackman of the Grant County Farm Bureau says there is a huge demand for employees in agriculture and related industries but programs at community colleges could be lost because of lack of students. So high school counselors and vocational teachers have been invited to this GoAg event. Sackman: "So this is a way we thought we could help our educate our educators about the career potential out there in agriculture and related fields and the fact that students can get the training for them in their own backyard." A followup Go Ag event next February will be aimed at potential students. I'm Bob Hoff.
