08/31/05 USDA announcement on animal ID

Washington Ag August 31, 2005 Addressing confidentiality concerns livestock producers have regarding a national animal identification system, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced Tuesday that animal movement data should be maintained in a private system. Johanns: "This allows the industry to continue developing data bases that house animal movement information. And we envision those data bases feeding a single privately held animal tracking repository that we can access. This initiative addresses producers' concerns while at the same time enabling federal and state officials to access information that we may need for disease control purposes." The private repository of animal movement data was one of four guiding principles the Secretary laid out yesterday. Another is that a national system must be able to track animals from point of origin to processing within 48 hours. Vickie Parker-Clark, an Extension professor with more than 22 years of experience, has been named the new director for Washington State University Extension's Northeast District. Parker Clark comes from the University of Idaho Extension system and will assume her new post October 1st. I'm Bob Hoff. .
