06/30/05 Stream flow lows; pest guides from WSU

Washington Ag June 30, 2005 Although it was a wet spring in much of Washington, the Ecology department says that earlier this week six stream-flow gauging stations in Western Washington and four in Eastern Washington posted daily record-low stream flows. Ecology says most streams in the state were on the dry side of normal. Ecology has now approved 101 drought related water right requests mostly for emergency wells in the Yakima River basin. Washington State University's College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences has two new field guides out to help identify pests. One is "Aphids of Western North America North of Mexico." The other is the "Western Washington Field Guide to Common Small Fruit Root Weevils." WSU entomologist Lynell Tanigoshi helped put the weevil guide together, which is printed on synthetic, plastic, waterproof paper. Tanigoshi: "It allows a person to put it in the pickup truck or look at it in the nursery when it might be wet or inclement weather. Looking at a weevil specimen with a hands lens, which we recommend. It keeps everything nice dry and not coming apart." Copies of the publications can be ordered from WSU Bulletins by calling 800-723-1763 or online as well. http://pubs.wsu.edu I'm
