05/10/05 Water conservation grants

Washington Ag May 10, 2005 Interior Secretary Gale Norton has approved just under ten-million dollars in Water 2025 Challenge Grants for water conservation projects across the West including four in Washington State. Speaking to farmbroadcasters in Washington D.C. last week, Norton described some of the work recipients have been doing with Water 2025 grants this past year. Norton: "And they have been using innovative techniques like having computerized monitoring of head-gates and the water monitoring in order to use irrigation water more efficiently, lining canals, developing water banks and water marketing that allows the owner of water to rent that water." The newly announced grants for Washington are 300-thousand dollars each for the Roza Irrigation District, the Selah-Moxee Irrigation District and the Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District. The Model Irrigation District No. 18 of Spokane is receiving just over 224-thousand dollars. The selected projects, which will also use non-federal funds, will now work with the Bureau of Reclamation to secure cooperative agreements and complete the regulatory process. The projects must be completed within 24 months. I'm Bob Hoff.
