02/09/05 WSU dean finalists; Early stripe rust?

Washington Ag February 9, 2005 Three finalists have been selected for further interviews and to meet faculty and staff as part of the search for a new dean of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources Sciences at Washington State University. Open-session meetings with the candidates are yet to be scheduled, but the three finalists are Daniel Bernardo, currently a professor and department head of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University, Ralph Cavalieri, currently serving as associate dean of the WSU College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resources Sciences as well as director of WSU's Agricultural Research Center, and James Kinder, currently chair of the Department of Animal Sciences at Ohio State University. A search committee has been seeking a replacement for James Cook who has served as interim dean since James Zuiches stepped down in August of 2003. Stripe rust may show up early this year in susceptible wheat and barley varieties. That's the word from Xianming Chen, Research Plant Pathologist with the Agricultural Research Service in Pullman. Chen: "In Pasco, Connell area, south-central Washington, very likely to see stripe rust in March." Weather conditions both last fall and this winter have been conducive to stripe rust and Chen says it has already been observed in the Corvallis, Oregon area. I'm Bob Hoff.
