Understanding the Wolf Issue

Understanding the Wolf Issue

Understanding the Wolf Issue. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Donny Martorello is the Wolf Policy Lead with WA Fish and Wildlife Department and says the Wolf Advisory Group has an upcoming meeting on Dec. 13 & 14 in Spokane to meet with all interested parties regarding the continued wolf issue here in the state. He says it's really important that everyone involved gets to know one another on a deeper level.

MARTORELLO: To try to understand kind of the personal values people have and kind of develop relationships in the human dimension side the term is kind of "humanize" the issue so that those stakeholders are not stuck in a group identity and they're not just seeing each other as that group identity of who they represent but they really know each other and they know the deep cultural values that everybody has

The Wolf Advisory Group or WAG has been busy lately.

MARTORELLO: They've had a few conference calls and field trips and tours and those kinds of things over the past few months and are digging into some of the issues. They are in the process right now of kind of working on some of the early items that were important to them in terms of what are some things they need to do first off. I think at the December meeting they're going to step back a little bit and maybe sequence the other things that are on their list of things to do over the next year and a half or so.

He feels that things have been moving forward.

MARTORELLO: That doesn't mean that they issues aren't difficult. That doesn't mean that it's easy for the stakeholders. It's not. They're really tough issues and it's difficult for each one of them but they've all invested in it and are seeing that through and still seeing positive signs that we are progressing through that process.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
