Livestock Grazing Water Quality Seminar

Livestock Grazing Water Quality Seminar

Livestock Grazing Water Quality Seminar. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Water quality regulations are a significant and legal risk for ranchers. Tip Hudson, Washington State University Extension rangeland and livestock management regional specialist and others will present a couple of workshops for ranchers on this touchy subject. Hudson believes that the Department of Ecology has been a little too aggressive in determining what's pollution and what's not pollution.

HUDSON: I guess I have dual objectives. One is to try to show people, convince people, livestock producers, conservation district people, Department of Ecology that poorly managed grazing can cause real problems. Truly significant, ecologically significant problems to show people that grazing done well can fix those problems and that grazing done poorly can perpetuate the problems.

The workshops will be held on October 22nd at the Fairfield Community Center and then on the 23rd at the Kittitas Valley Event Center.

HUDSON: The most productive work sessions, workshops that I've seen are when you have livestock producers, content experts and regulators and conservation district folk and have a thorough conversation, that tends to be extremely productive.

Hudson says you do need to register due to limited space.

HUDSON: Because of the sponsors and the mini-grant the registration doesn't cost anything but we are asking people to register by calling our office her in Ellensburg.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
