Shellfish Growers Conference and Tradeshow

I'm Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

Margaret Barrette, Executive Director of the Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association, is back today to talk about the 68th annual Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Conference & Tradeshow, which will be September 23 through the 25 in Vancouver, Washington.

BARRETTE: We do our conference in conjunction with the National Shellfisheries Association, who tends to be made up of university professors and students, so we have a pretty intensive track of current research that's being done. We also will hear from Dr. Edward Allison from the University of Washington. He has 20 years experience in the field of fisheries and aquaculture and his research focuses on the contribution of fisheries to food nutrition security and our costal livelihoods.

A visit to the Food Innovation Center in Portland will also be part of the conference where attendees can learn about the consumer sensory testing and food engineering labs. Dr. Bob Rheault, Director of the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association, will be addressing the group on market trends and challenges that are being seen there in the shellfish industry. Barrett remarks on challenges for shellfish growers here in Washington.

BARRETTE: In Washington state I think the challenge is really getting acceptance and being able to continue to add farms and to grow farming. And it is really - it's a crop, and people don't often think of it that way because it's done in a completely different space than wheat, and corn, and peas.
