RMA Sales Closing Dates & WOTUS Comment Period

Producers are reminded that sales closing dates for USDA Risk Management Agency 2015 fall crop Multi-Peril Crop Insurance programs are quickly approaching. Canola/rapeseed and fall planted onions sales closing deadline is September 2. Mint with winter coverage, along with forage production, forage alfalfa seed pilot, fall planted barley with winter coverage, and fall planted dry peas and lentils with winter coverage, and wheat all have a September 30 sales closing date. For more information and specific details producers should contact their local crop insurance agent.

Washington cattle rancher Jack Field would like to remind everyone that the comment period on the EPA's proposal to redefine "Waters of the U.S." is still open.

FIELD: Folks have until the 20th of October to submit comments and it is absolutely essential that each and every one of us takes the time to comment. The rule would expand the jurisdictional reach that EPA has under the Clean Water Act and give them the ability to regulate activities that occur either in the water or in riparian areas and areas adjacent to waters that the EPA would now have new authority and ability to define as navigable if they deem them to be connective to a water or tributary that drains into a water of the U.S..

Comments can be submitted at regulations.gov or at www.beefusa.org.

FIELD: If we're successful I think we'll see the rule withdrawn. And if EPA is intent on crafting a rule, maybe next time they'll have the ag industry and landowners and impacted stakeholders at the table from the beginning.

That's Washington Ag Today.
