Cow Herd Management & Cheese Making Farm Walk

I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

As part of this year’s Tilth Producers of Washington and WSU Small Farms Program Farm Walk Education Series Spokane Family Farm operators Trish and Tim Hutchins will be showing how they and their crew produce high quality milk and cheese for consumers in the greater Spokane area. Angela Anegon, Education Coordinator with Tilth Producers, explains about the farm’s practices and what attendees will learn about.

ANEGON: On July 28 we’ll be visiting Spokane Family Farm in Spokane. It is a cow dairy that focuses on using renewable agriculture practices as well as minimal processing of their milk. They do this using low temperature pasteurization - technically that leaves much of the good bacteria that makes milk so healthy for consumers. In addition they do not homogenize their milk which they believe makes it more digestible for people who are consuming it. We will also focus on their use of top genetics, clean and humane treatment of their animals, as well as feeding them nutritious natural feed and having low stress management of their cows.

Trish and Tim will also be demonstrating the cheese making process and those attending will receive some Spokane Family Farm milk and rennet culture to experiment with cheese making at home. There will be an additional $5 registration fee for this component. Paid, pre-registration is recommended for all farm walks as spaces are limited.

We’ll be visiting more with Tilth Producers of Washington about future farm walks throughout the summer months. For more information about farm walk times and locations and other Tilth Producers education programs be sure to visit tilthproducers.org.

That’s Washington Ag Today.
