Winter Wheat Varieties Planted and Drought Monitor Report

According to the recent NASS Colorado Winter Wheat Varieties report, Colorado wheat producers seeded an estimated 2.20 million acres to winter wheat in the fall of 2016 for harvest in 2017, down from 2.35 million acres seeded for the 2016 crop. Byrd was the most popular variety seeded in Colorado for the third consecutive year, planted on 24.7 percent or almost one-fourth of the acreage for the 2017 crop compared with 33.2 percent for the 2016 crop. Hatcher was, once again, the second most popular variety by accounting for 10.8 percent of the acreage, down from 13.5 percent for the 2016 crop. Brawl CL Plus kept third place by accounting for 10.8 percent of the acres seeded for 2017. The top ten varieties represented 69.2 percent of the state's total acreage seeded for the 2017 crop.

Brunet: "In Eastern Colorado moderate drought conditions were extended to Northwest Yuma County and Northern Washington County and Southeast Logan County. This area has received below 50 percent of normal precipitation since the beginning of October and recent weather has been hot and windy. The winter wheat also appears to be poor condition. Additionally, abnormally dry conditions are expanded in the northern border of Weld County."
