**The Humboldt County, Calif., sheriff has arrested a 54-year-old rancher after a five-month investigation into what was termed "large-scale animal cruelty."

According to agweb.com, Sheriff's deputies served search warrants on four properties in Humboldt County, owned by Raymond Frank Christie, of Arcata, and found nearly 300 cows stacked in 10-foot high piles on the property.

Christie was booked on multiple animal cruelty charges. He was released after posting $25,000 bail.

**President Trump signed off on a plan to punish China for years of stealing intellectual property by imposing about $60 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese goods.

According to Agri-Pulse, the much anticipated and feared move came despite a growing chorus of warnings from Capitol Hill and farm groups that the new duties will spark a trade war and China will retaliate by taxing or blocking U.S. agricultural goods.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has been addressing farm-state lawmakers' fears that China would hit back and U.S. soybean exports would be the primary target.

**Cattle groups are saddling up to make sure consumers know beef comes from animals, not from cells grown indoors.

Agriculture.com reports, the U.S. Cattlemen's Association has petitioned the USDA to define beef as the product of cattle born, raised, and slaughtered in the traditional manner.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association says one of its five policy priorities is "protecting the industry and consumers from fake meat and misleading labels."
