Crowd Cow Provides Direct Market for Beef Producers

Yesterday we began a conversation with Crowd Cow Co-founder and CEO Joe Heitzeberg about his company which provides an online store for consumers to purchase homegrown beef and pick what the quantity and cuts they'd like to purchase. The Seatle-based company is two years old and quickly expanding.

Heitzeberg says they are continually looking for additional beef producers to participate in their business, especially those who have a passion for sharing their farm or ranch story with consumers.

Heitzeberg: "We're less about, 'Here are our stringent requirements or program. We're want more variety. We want people to explore the great variety that is the world of beef. We want high quality beef — obviously. So there are some things that we don't deviate from like we prefer birth to harvest on one ranch. We prefer family multi-generational operations where they are doing it not just as their family business but as their family's tradition and values. I think that is part of — you are buying this to eat and serve it for your family— why not buy it from someone who created it as part of their family. So it creates that connection and makes you feel better about where your dollars are going. We certainly love variety in terms of — we love grass-fed, grass-finished and that is a big growing segment of the beef but we have a lot of customers who have told us, 'Hey give me corn-finished beef because I like the way it tastes.'"
