Agribusiness Update for Tuesday 05/26/15

This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin...

By a vote of 62 to 38 the Senate invoked cloture to begin debate on trade promotion authority legislation last Thursday. The motion allows 30-hours of debate on an amendment to extend the charter of the Export-Import Bank. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden says the vote shows the U.S. Senate is ready to turn the page on the trade policy of the 90s. Wyden says the legislation ensures new transparency for all trade deals - and he is working to ensure the Senate votes on as many amendments as possible and passes TPA into law.

The nation's largest food retailer is asking it's suppliers to treat their animals better and to curb the use of antibiotics. Walmart is taking a stance against antibiotics use and has created guidelines for it's suppliers that include reporting animal abuse and to produce an annual report on the use of antibiotics, animal welfare reform in addition to keeping the general public informed as well. Walmart is the first major retailer to take this hardline stance.
