Agribusiness Update for Monday 02/10/14

The President has signed the farm bill into law ending a three year tussle between the House and the Senate. In his remarks at Michigan State University, the President announced a new "Made in Rural America" initiative that White House officials said was intended to help rural businesses market their goods abroad.

APHIS has published a final notice in the Federal Register today affirming its decision to maintain the light brown apple moth as a quarantine pest. The decision comes in response to two petitioners who requested that APHIS reclassify LBAM as a non-quarantine pest. APHIS and the California Department of Food and Agriculture will continue their ongoing, joint efforts to control LBAM in California.

Immigration reform hit a major speed bump as Speaker of the House John Boehner announced last week that it was unlikely he could pass an immigration bill. He said, House Republicans are not prepared to move forward in partnership with a Democratic administration that they believe will not fairly and impartially carry out the laws they pass. Lawmakers on both sides of the issue conceded that the politics had turned sharply negative in recent days.
