Agribusiness Update for Friday 12/27/13

At the beginning of the year it looked like immigration reform would occur as both parties seemed to want to move it along. But reform legislation is stuck in the House. Immigration reform supporter and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says there's a loss of confidence in the government's ability which he says makes it difficult for people to trust the government to handle immigration reform properly and effectively.

New research by the NPD Group shows more than half of U.S. consumers are concerned about genetically modified organisms. However - when asked to describe what GMOs are - many shoppers are unclear on the concept. NPD asked consumers to describe what GMOs mean in their own words - and common words used included genetically altered, not natural and don't know.

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service posted its third annual performance plan for 2014. The plan includes eight specific goals to be achieved by the end of the fiscal year including ensuring food safety inspection aligns with existing and emerging risks - maximizing domestic and international compliance with food safety policies and enhancing public education and outreach to improve food-handling practices.
