Agribusiness Update for Tuesday 11/26/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin...

Congress left for the Thanksgiving holiday without a deal to avoid a government shutdown. However - there are plans for lead negotiators to continue work over the break - and it appears they are optimistic about reaching an agreement. Senate Budget Chair Patty Murray said she's working closely with House Budget Chair Paul Ryan to find a path forward in good faith.

House Speaker John Boehner recently said he would not support negotiating with the Senate on its comprehensive immigration reform bill - but that doesn't mean immigration reform is dead. At least that's what he told reporters last week. Boehner said his chamber is still working on the issue and reaffirmed his commitment to enacting reform.

Several groups are part of the U.S. national committee to promote a global initiative the United Nations launched Friday. The UN has declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming. Many countries have formed national committees to carry out activities in cooperation. Nation Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says the initiative is critical to the future of the industry because people are further and further removed from family farming and where their food, fuel and fiber are produced.
