Agribusiness Update for Friday 09/20/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin...

Testing on the alfalfa found in eastern Washington confirms that there was a low level presence of RoundUp Ready seed but that those levels were well within the guidelines for both export and domestic. RoundUp Ready hay has been fully approved for use by the USDA and they have stated there will not be any further action on this matter.

China has a growing interest in eventually joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership. It wasn't that long ago that the Chinese government referred to the Asia-Pacific trade agreement as part of an insidious trade scheme by the U.S. designed to keep China from gaining global ground. But with Japan joining the talks - Chinese officials are looking at the talks more positively. Leaders of the 12 nations involved in the TPP negotiations have said they plan to finish the deal by the end of the year.

A quarterly report from the United Fresh Produce Association shows that compared to last year's figures - fresh produce sales are up for the second quarter this year. Leading the pack in growth were organic fruits and vegetables with increases in dollar sales of 34.9-percent and 16.2-percent respectively.
