Agribusiness Update for Tuesday 8/6/13

The U.S. has won a major case at the World Trade Organization on behalf of the nation’s chicken producers. A WTO dispute settlement panel agreed with the U.S. that China’s imposition of higher duties on chicken broiler products - which was followed by an 80-percent drop in American exports of those products to China - is unjustified under international trade rules and found China violated numerous WTO obligations.

Before adjourning for the August recess - the House approved the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny - or REINS - Act of 2013. The legislation - which passed on a 232 to 183 vote - requires congressional approval of regulations that cost more than 100-million dollars. House Ag Committee Chair Frank Lucas says the American private sector is struggling due to unnecessary regulatory initiatives put in place by federal agencies.

Agriculture Marketing Service Administrator Anne Alonzo has announced that more than eight-thousand farmers markets are now registered with USDA and will be included in USDA’s Farmers Market Directory. Alonzo made the announcement as part of a celebration kicking-off Farmers Market Week in Washington, D.C. Farmers Market Week officially started Sunday.
