A working group has been established in the House to help write a nutrition bill that could win enough Republican votes for passage. There are rumors the group includes more than 20 members including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. According to a Cantor aide - the leader is involved in a variety of outreach efforts with members to chart a path forward on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson has stated his organization’s opposition to the proposed acquisition of Smithfield Foods by Shuanghui International in a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. Lew is Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. Johnson says the proposed buyout is extremely alarming to NFU members across the country.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell have announced a federal, local and private partnership to reduce the risks of wildfire to America’s water supply in western states. Flows of sediment, debris and ash into streams and rivers after wildfires can damage water quality and often require millions of dollars to repair damage to habitat, reservoirs and facilities.
