Agribusiness Update for Thursday 5/23/13

According to USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service - more than 220-million acres - or more than 50-percent - of the nation’s wetlands no longer function. NRCS Acting Chief Jason Weller says the greatest potential for wetland restoration is on private lands. He says those are the people influencing our future landscapes. Wetlands are good for the environment and have significant economic benefits.

To prevent fresh produce from going to waste - United Fresh has long partnered with Feeding America. This year - more than 30 volunteers helped collect donations from the convention floor following the United Fresh show in Sand Diego to benefit those in need who are serviced by Feeding America San Diego’s partner agencies such as food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding centers.

California-based chicken producer Foster Farms is recalling about 6,165 pounds of its ready-to-eat grilled chicken breast strips because the strips contain wheat and soy - known allergens - which are not listed on the labels of its packages, federal agriculture officials said.
