Agribusiness Update for Monday 4/29/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I’m Greg Martin...

Britain’s beekeepers and others have staged a demonstration outside Parliament to try and convince the government to back a ban on pesticides that have been blamed for a worrying drop in bee populations. The demonstrators say they hope to influence Britain's vote next week on a proposed European Union ban on some pesticides.

The official markup notice hasn’t been issued but House Ag Committee Chairman Frank Lucas says the committee will markup the 2013 Farm Bill on May 15th. He says they’ll start with a draft that is essentially the 2012 document with adjustments. But in the end - he expects the Ag Committee members will stick to the principles they agreed upon last year when writing the farm bill.

Legislation to require the Food and Drug Administration to clearly label all genetically engineered foods has been introduced in the U.S. House and Senate. The legislation has the support of a broad coalition of consumer groups, businesses, farmers, fishermen and parents who all agree consumers deserve more information about the food they buy.
