Seasoned fly fisherman and brand-new archery hunter Sam Williamson goes after his first bull elk in Colorado. “I shot my first public land elk on a draw license along the front range here. I was up hunting with my friend who called me on Sunday night. He said he had put down an elk and I went up and helped him pack out his elk. We hunted the next morning. We had been up all night, we were dead tired and he decided to go back down to the front range to take care of the meat. I stayed up and hunted that night and I was hunting solo in an area that I had grown up fishing, camping and skiing and it was surreal to be hunting elk there. I didn’t see anything or hear anything that night and went to bed a little bit discouraged. Woke up early in the morning and got up on a ridge and I heard to cow calls in the morning. Brand-new hunter so I was doing a lot of research on reading thermals. Doing my research on elk hunting and archery and I played the wind terribly and I did what everybody told me not to do which was go down the ridge in the morning. Anyway, I followed those two cow calls, eventually got into a small herd of elk and split the herd. I went after a spike, he was the first one I saw. He was moving through an Aspen Grove and I was trying to put a stalk on him and actually got pretty close to him.” But things changed big time and will hear about that tomorrow.
