At the bow of the canoe, I dug my paddle into the last stretch of broken water and pushed hard toward the sheet ice. Rising up onto the frozen water, the boat teetered as if deciding which way to tip. My stomach twisted, knowing the rest of me was going for a swim. That's how duck hunter and Field and Stream writer Michael Shea starts his story called Breaking the Ice. It's about a duck hunt in Upstate New York's Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and it gets off to a cold, slow start before things really heat up. Here's editor-in-chief of Field and Stream Colin Kearns to fill us in.
