Equine veterinarian, Dr. Kevin Hankins discusses the dangers associated with horses and rabies. "Most of the time you don't have any idea that horse has rabies. You will get exposed and that's the bad thing about rabies in horses and why it's really important because of the potential to spread to other humans. It's also a death sentence if the horse gets rabies. Why you should vaccinate, again, a properly vaccinated horse, that is a vaccine which is 100% effective. Does it transmit through saliva? Yes. If they present as they are colicky, you're messing around in their mouth all the time, putting nasal gastric tubes in them, you are working around their mouth so you have a high exposure to the saliva itself. It is not something you want to mess around with. You mean you don't want to “horse" around with it. ( Laughter) Exactly.
