Brett Bartlett was on a weekend hunt when “one of my buddies was calling back and forth with this bull who bedded down in a real thicket and the challenge that night was for me to try and sneak in there and do what I could to see if I could at least see him. That night was a great encounter because it was being a lot of very sneaky, very quiet listening to the chorus the whole time. That one ended ultimately without success. I did see the elk which was great but had absolutely no chance of a shot or an encounter. Those of the things you dream about at night. The real story happened when we got back to camp and it was real dark. We sat around the fire and there was an elk that was bugling around 11 o'clock at night about the a quarter-mile away. It was very consistent, it was the same bugle over and over and it was every minute or so. We sat around and listened for a while and we finally went to sleep. It bugled all night long and I couldn’t sleep. By about 4:30 in the morning, almost 3 hours before light, I couldn't take it anymore so I got up and waited for the sun to come up

and the reason it was a typical elk hunt was Brett ended up climbing a ridge, seeing a 5 x 5, that he couldn't get an ethical shot on. Not every hunt ends in success does it but that's life
