6-28 SS Fishing Reels

How should you properly take care of your fishing reels? I’m David Sparks, this is sportsman’s spotlight and we will talk to an expert in a minute. Val Hilzendeger from Larrys Rod & Reel Repair in Airway Heights, Washington was nice enough to spend a little time on the phone with me the other day. He’s been in the business of repairing every fishing real imaginable for a long time. He says that today’s reels are built so well that they don’t need much repair. This is particularly true if you maintain the reels you have. Listen up. “If you only use them in fresh water, if it is a bait caster then just put a drop or two of very light oil onto the worm shaft and then run it back and forth a few times to lube it but that will help to keep it from wearing out so soon but you do not want to overly lubricate it with grease or whatever, just a real light oil a couple of drops. That will last you a year. On spinning reels, there really isn’t much you need to do, they hold up very well, I get very few. But the only thing that goes wrong with spinning reels is when guys hit the bails  bump them and bend them a little bit and that is what causes the bails sometimes to stick is because they bent it so you need to be careful about that. As far as maintenance on them there is not much you need to do. On the trolling reels, there really isn’t much you need to do except every three or four years just give them a good cleaning inside and then put them back together and they will last you a long time.
