5-5 SS Afternoon Turkeys

5-5 SS Afternoon Turkeys

Turkey hunting tradition may not have to be as restricted as you might think. We are going to find out in today’s episode that being hunkered down in a blind at five in the morning is not the only way to be successful.

We all know that Josh Mills can fly fish like nobody else. But he is also an accomplished and successful wild Turkey Hunter as we are about to find out. “You know many times turkey hunters have a tendency to just hunt the morning and the evening and then go back to camp fix a late breakfast, drink some coffee and take a nap because you are up at 430 in the morning. My suggestion is to do what a lot of the successful guys to and that is to stay out in the woods. Do yourself a favor and pack a little bit of food, take a thermos of coffee, throw a back pack on and stay out in the woods. The turkeys stay active, they have to be doing things in the middle of the day. They are not sleeping. They are foraging, looking for love and they’re gobbling activity will have a tendency to slow down in the middle of the day. But you still can get them to come in. Do a little bit of what I call closing the gap and call in different areas. Sometimes softly, sometimes aggressively but stay out in the woods. The guys that stay out in the woods are the guys that bag the birds while the rest of the guys are sitting back in camp gabbing and waiting for nightfall when the turkeys come back to roost. So the messages stay out there and keep hunting.
