Tour Provides Health Providers First Hand Experience

Earlier this fall, a group of health officials had to the opportunity to see first hand what a feedlot and dairy looked like and how antibiotics were used at each of the facilities.

Washington State Beef Commission Director of Digital Strategies Bridget Coon explains how the tour came together.

Coon: "The Beef Commission works in partnership with the Washington State Dairy Products Commission to host the One Health Working Group on a tour of a large feedlot and a large dairy in Eastern Washington to address the topic of antibiotics resist in livestock production.

Coon continues with way it was important to bring this particular group on a field trip to experience these ag operations.

Coon: "The One Health Group is comprised of health care providers, researchers, public health experts on the state level. They represent human health and animal and environment health interests. Really are tasked with addressing potential causes of antibiotic resistance and potential ways to prevent that."

She says the event sparked dialogue and provided background knowledge for the group.

Coon: "The key take away that a lot of the panelists told us was that they were impressed with the level of sanitation and prevention of the need for antibiotic use."
