Benefits of Backgrounding Calves

With prices in the cattle market recently taken a downturn, it is very important that cattle producers differentiate their calves. Performix Nutrition Systems Animal Nutritionist Boone Carter says it is important to prepare calves to enter the feed yard prior to selling them.
Carter: “One way we can do this is making sure that the calves are ready nutritionally for the immune challenge that will come. They can do that by making sure that those calves get a good mineral package before they go into the feed yard — for at least 30 days, preferably 60. A lot of times calves come off the mountain or extensive range, an where they don’t have access to minerals or may be deficit. So along with a good vaccine program of two or more doses, low-stress weaning program and a good mineral program helps prepare those calves so they have that foundation to respond when those challenges come.”
Carter urges producers to take these extra steps to ensure their calves are well prepared to enter the feed yard. While buyers will pay a premium for backgrounded calves, they are not as eager to purchase calves that have not been prepared for the transition into the feedlot.
Carter: “After they get them once or twice, they will either build the risk into the price when they buy those calves or they will avoid them or not buy them at all.”
