Affect of AAA Shakeup on the PNW

Last week I reported about the shakeup at the American Angus Association which resulted in large staff turnover. While six staff members in St. Joseph, Missouri were let go — the other six were regional managers from across the country. Here in the Pacific Northwest region, it meant the loss of our regional manager of the past 21 years — Rod Wesselman.

Because it is a personnel issue, the Association isn't doing much talking other than the letter they posted on their website — though the internet chat rooms and forums are a blaze with comments on both sides of issue. I've talked to several breeders about the situation, and everyone seems to have more questions than answers at this time.

As I reported earlier Eric Grant, American Angus Association's Director of Public Relations and Communications has asked members to be patient through the transition process as it may take six months to a year for operations to return to normal.

Regardless of where your thoughts lie on the situation, whom ever will be taking the position here to represent Washington, Idaho and Oregon will have some pretty big shoes to fill. Rod is a well-known figure in the region's Angus industry who had represented the association at countless purebred sales. He has also been a tireless promoter of the Angus breed as well as the beef industry.
