DamWatch & Wildlife Lawsuit

DamWatch & Wildlife Lawsuit. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

The northwest has our fair share of dams and NRCS Chief Jason Weller yesterday announced the availability of DamWatch, a new web-based application that provides real-time monitoring of rainfall, snowmelt, stream flow and seismic events that could pose potential threats to dam safety.

WELLER: When a certain rainfall event is enough severity and intensity where we actually estimate it would fill the flood retention pond of this structure and would like then be going through the emergency auxiliary spillway it will then send an automated text, phone call, email to the local official responsible for ensuring the safety of that dam.

The killing of wildlife in Idaho is up for some scrutiny as a conservation group files a lawsuit seeking information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services methods and activities in killing wildlife. The group says that the agency is violating the Freedom of Information Act by not supplying information the group made in five requests in February and March. Another lawsuit filed back in February contends that federal and Idaho officials are violating environmental laws by killing wolves, coyotes and other wildlife to protect livestock and crops.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
