New Online Decision Tools For Wheat Growers

There is no shortage of research available online, but often the challenge lies in finding ways to harness that information in practical ways that will make help farming business decisions.
There is a new online decision tool for wheat growers that has just been launched to do just that. Dr. Drew Lyon, Washington State University Endowed Chair in Small Grains Extension and Research says that these tools pull the data into a form that farmers can easily use.
Lyon: “And that is one of things we want to do with the website is provide growers with tools. It is a way of taking data — there is a lot of data generated at Washington State University — but sometimes hard to get your head around and use. We want to use that kind of data in these research tools to help farmers make better decisions.”
Lyon shares more about one of the four tools.
Lyon: “That can be accessed at smallgrains.wsu.edu. The first one is a variety selection tool that basically goes in and queries the very large data base that Dr. Stephen Guy has collected from his variety trials throughout Eastern Washington. And it is able to go in there and take a look and pull data from the rainfall zones you are in or interested in, the type of wheat you are looking for, pulls it together in a table that is easily manipulated so that they can look at the characteristics growers are most interested in. It helps them to decide what varieties that they might want to look at for planting on their farm.”
