There lives a man in Cascade, Idaho who might very well be the world’s foremost expert on cow wolf encounters. “He seems to have an area that wolves want to walk through. When they walk through they go Hmmm…cattle. He finds them and then calls us.” That is cattle rancher Phil Davis being introduced to a group of cattlemen back in 2015. Davis, showing pictures to authorities, “I do have some experience with wolves. Every one of these are wolf depredation over the last 20 years. Here are 44 and four probable.” Fast forward to August 2018. “When we had two dead cows in two days, as of today it’s three dead cows in three days and seven in the Valley in the last five.” Since his first cow loss to wolves in 1996, Davis has been active in wolf control. His relationship with government agencies who manage the wolf is mostly good. He agrees past control methods have had an impact on pack behavior but it has been short-lived and a long-term failure. Back in 2015 he spoke to cattlemen about their responsibilities to gather accurate cattle loss information that would help in allowing more lethal control.
