Born and raised in West Texas, Mike Conaway represents Texas’ 11th Congressional District. He came to Congress in 2005. He serves as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, where he strongly advocates for farmers, ranchers, rural communities, and consumers while ensuring programs under the committee’s jurisdiction are defensible and financially responsible. Ahead of tomorrow's “State of the Rural Economy” hearing with Sec. Perdue, Chairman Conaway talks about farm bill concerns. “As we get closer and closer to taking the actual farm bill to committee and on to the house floor, it is not lost on any of us that the writing of this farm bill is dramatically different than what was done in 2014. 2014 was coming off of two or three good years, good yields, good prices, things were relatively good in production agriculture and nothing could be further from the truth today. 4+ years of reduced crop prices, 50% drop in net farm income, so hard times in crop and production agriculture.”
