Up to 70% of feedlot cattle deaths are caused by bovine respiratory disease or BRD. In fact, BRD is known as the cattle industries $1 billion enemy, thus necessitating the use of antibiotics. But, as we all know, there is a concept called Antibiotic stewardship. This is a phrase cattlemen have heard many times in the past few years. Do we know what it means? Zoetis asked beef producers and our veterinary colleagues to define, in their own words, what it means to them and for those involved in the beef industry. Sound bites from a Zoetis video give some of the reasons why antibiotic stewardship needs to be an important part of every disease management program. Veterinarian Dr. Brenda Paul: “Antibiotic stewardship incorporates a lot of the elements of stewardship of any other type, like environmental stewardship or financial stewardship. It's prudently using your resources and responsibly making these decisions.”

Veterinarian Dr. Robin Falkner: "When I hear someone mention antimicrobial stewardship, I don't always know what that means to them but I know what stewardship means to me, it means I care.”
