If you're nuts about fruits... and nuts then you ought to be headed for Oregon. New national statistics show Oregon as a leading producer of many types of fruits with several delicious crops already in season. There should be plenty of fresh, local fruit products available over the next couple of months from one of the nation's leading fruit producers, the state of Oregon. Lindsay Eng of the Oregon Department of Agriculture says behind all the numbers is the fact that the state's climate and fertile soils, along with the skill and expertise of the growers, produce a great tasting and much desired food product enjoyed by consumers near and far:

"We produce a variety of fruits and nuts, very high quality fruits and nuts that are valued in our local markets, national markets, and all over the world. Great demand for those products overseas. Locally, we have a very vibrant local food scene, vibrant farmers' market scene, vibrant u-pick scene."

The numbers show that Oregon grows virtually all of the nation's commercial blackberries, boysenberries, Marionberries, and hazelnuts. Oregon is also one of the top producers of raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, sweet cherries, and pears. All told, these crops are worth hundreds of millions of dollars in production value and contribute heavily to the nation's fruit basket.
