Weed Awareness

Harvest is a great time to check on what weeds are showing up in fields. North Dakota State University Extension weed specialist Dr. Rich Zollinger recommends paying attention to what weeds that are still there. “For those who are observant, this can be an excellent time to map and track their weed problems that escaped their herbicide applications or even other flushes that came in after the applications, so they can determine the weed species that are prevalent this fall and especially the areas of the field where the weeds are thicker or have a higher pressure than normal.”

Zollinger says mapping doesn't have to be complicated. “With just a little piece of paper, I know everything is electronic these days but you can just draw a quick map of the field and put some circles or some lines to designate where these weeds are so come next spring, they may use a little higher rate of a soil applied herbicide, they may use a double application, anything to prevent the germination or diminish the weeds that they had seen this fall.” We have done so many stories on satellites and drones, this may provide an even easier way to map your fields if you are using that technology.
